The world’s top ranked surfer then dropped out of the Billabong Rio Pro noting, “I can pull into the tube but that’s about it. I can’t turn with the stitches in my heel, and with the small waves (in Rio de Janeiro). It’s probably going to turn into an air contest.” The coral reef that punctured his right heel embedded small pieces, infecting the area and requiring additional procedures. Last week…

With tricky conditions and plenty of swell left at Barra Da Tijuaca, the Billabong Rio Pro saw some wild heats today as they ran Rounds 4 and 5 to set up the quarterfinals. The undisputed heat of the day came from two competitors who are familiar with nail-biting finishes-- Julian Wilson and John John Florence. Wilson started the heat with a brilliantly surfed left where threw his fins skyward three times for a 9.83, which he then backed up with a clean forehand tube, for a 7.17...

A very unlikely final in San Clemente at the Nike Pro. Ireland's Glenn Hall faced off against Brazilian Gabriel Medina. The match up is strange in a few ways. For one, Glenn Hall was a veritable unknown heading into  the event, but his surfing was powerful and consistent, reminiscent of a young Tommy Carroll with big carves off the lip  and deep gouging cutties. Although he came unglued in the final, there was no stopping the goofy footer from putting down all comers en route to a finals appearance. On the other end, there was Gabriel Medina who had rocketed into the spotlight last…

    28 Apr 2012 | 3:33 pm
As a young surfer, I spent all my time in the water focused on the here and now. Surfing's history meant nothing. It was all about the next wave and my next move. After all, surfing is a very transitory experience. The feeling is intense and unexpected and then it's gone, and we are left scrambling to replicate it. My mission was to dash the past and forge on to something new, neglecting the rich history of surfing and the insanely talented characters and athletes who made up the skeleton of a narrative in  which I am merely an insignificant ghost. Today, I have gained the patience to…

A better choice:  Coconut yogurt or chia seed pudding. Instant Oatmeal:  Instant oatmeal tends to be just as high in sugar as other cereals and may be contaminated with gluten during manufacturing. A better choice:  Try steel-cut oatmeal, or buckwheat granola. Fruit Juice:  Even…

Mick Fanning (AUS), 30, two-time ASP World Champion, is entering the Billabong Rio Pro fresh off of a win at Bells Beach and with current frontrunner Kelly Slater (USA), 40, withdrawn from the event, Fanning will look to capitalize on the…

I sat on the report a little bit this morning because yesterday defied all typical summer patterns, and the wind backed off as the morning progressed, and the surf got better. So I thought I’d check it late in the morning, rather than the crack of dawn, to see if we might be in for a repeat of that. Well, that sure as hell hasn’t happened. Gone are the waist-to-chest high, playful waves, replaced with summer slop. It’s cold, it’s foggy, it’s onshore, it’s small, and the surf sucks. Welcome to summer everyone, enjoy the doldrums! Small semi-clean lines coming in feathering on the outside  and/or tripping on the inside sandbar. The inside is walled for the most part, but it looks like there are some corners to snag. Long period swell is helping it look somewhat organized at times. Tide is full now. Wave shape could improve marginally with the low tide, but it’s likely to be a longboard or fish day. Sorry for the late report. It was super foggy early, then I decided to get a utility session in once it burned off. Either way, there was a small window there when the fog lifted a bit, the morning sickness subsided, the tide was out, and the wind hadn’t come up yet. That window has probably past now, but there are still a good number of folks paddling around and making the best of it. Can’t blame ‘em, it’s Spring, so passable conditions are few and far between. It’s a clear morning with clean surface conditions. Waves coming in at the chest to head high range. Still a bit jarbled, perhaps due to some morning sickness, with the inside doubling up and closing out while the outside feathers. We’re heading towards a 9 am low tide so things should get interesting as conditions are looking pretty ideal for a surf. The HD Hero is only good for 170 (or “fisheye”) view which is great for mounting the camera on your board. Not so great when you just want to take footage of friends – even if they are only a couple feet away, the fisheye view of the HD Hero makes it look like they are 20 feet away. Mom's play a big part in shaping who you are.  Jason Gay of the Sports section of the Wall Street Journal summed it up perfectly this weekend.  Read the article here.   I know my mom spent a lot of time in the pits at the BMX track, after braving commuter traffic.  She also got up awfully early, many times, to get me to a surf contest.   Thanks, Mom!

Growing up in Laguna Beach, I used to go into Equipe.  It was a great shop with cool stuff.  I remember when Martin Potter started riding Blue Hawaii surfboards by Glenn Minami.  All of a sudden, Equipe carried those boards.  They looked like something out of the future, fast and sexy. This article is fascinating.  It is interesting to read about the "big brands" of the time, and how many of them have gone the way of the dodo.  Brands that still exist today embraced the changes that made them nervous at the time.  Doug Bunting, the former owner of Equipe,…

I have the honour and privilege of having a father who surfs.  When I started, he took it back up again in earnest.  Surfing with my dad gave me some of my most memorable times surfing.  Above are just a few of the spots we surfed together. DOHENY - The Boneyard - We used to go surf this after school when I was in Junior High.  Fun, fun, fun.  Dad also surfed it HUGE when he was younger.  He stated he should not have been out there; it scared him.  I loved that.  It made me feel like less of a wimp when the surf got big. • Reduce Flutter with a Dihedral Paddle Blade

    8 May 2012 | 11:30 pm
Have you ever noticed your paddle blade fluttering through the water as you're taking your stroke?  This is common with paddle blades where the power face is completely flat.  Flutter is not only inefficient, but it can also lead to stress and tendinitis in your hand and wrist.   Dihedral blades have a raised edge align with the paddle shaft leading through the middle of the blade and  flattening just before the blade's top edge.  This edge, much like a boat or board's bow, splits the water as it comes in contact with the blade allowing the blade to move smoothly…

A neighbor called today complaining of a sore hand, he thinks due to his SUP paddling. I offered some tips on relieving or better yet, preventing pain. Always use the lightest grip possible on the paddle.  Lower hand should resemble the OK sign, upper thumb should hook the t-grip with gently resting the rest of the hand on top.  Wrist and forearms should be in align, not cocked at an angle.  Both hand. Straight ish arm stroke revieves pressure from your hands. Relax!  Even when you’re going faster or are rushing, chill.. Relax you’ll go faster doing so. Get a bent…

In teaching I come across a lot of different types of people.  One thing that has come to my attention lately are folks who have various anxieties about water, being on the water, or with paddling.  Here's a few of the most common I've experienced at recent paddling festivals or in my lessons.. - Being scared of the water. - I don't go out on water where I can't see the bottom. - I don't have good balance.   - I don't like to get my feet wet. - I can't swim. - I don't like sharks. - You won't be able to teach me.  or..  I'll be your worst student.
  • SUP Death on the River.. When to Wear a Leash

Last weekend a woman drowned when her leash got snagged on a tree on the Chetco River near Brookings, Oregon. Story Here. River SUP is certainly a hoot, but it's also very dangerous.  Good river SUP instruction is required before hitting the water.  Leashes are catch 22. They can keep you from losing your board in a fall but also can create a major issue if it gets caught on a log, branch, or rock. A Few River Hazards: - Strainers: Logs or branches in the river. Water runs under these and you can get trapped if you try to paddle near, on, or under.  I've heard a few sketchy…

Its always incredibly sad whenever news arrives of a surfer losing a life doing what they love to do, especially when its something so shocking as a shark attack, but great whites seem to be an occupational hazard for South African surfers and the core guys down there seem to accept the risks: The stuff of nightmares “A 20-year-old body boarder was killed Thursday when a giant shark estimated at up to five metres long bit off his leg in a Cape Town bay, in South Africa’s second deadly mauling this year. ‘The deceased man sustained complete amputation of his right leg, below the…

I am a big fan of polarized sunglasses seeing that I spend alot of time at the beach and they tend to cut the glare off the water. Here are my top 5 pairs of sunglasses for this summer! As Dane Reynolds came in from his heat yesterday, he couldn't have been happier. He was smiling, making jokes and talking to all the groms waiting for autographs on the beach. A stark contrast to the stereotype that surf media has created since dropping off the ASP World Tour. It is quite possible that dropping off the tour was the best thing for Dane Reynolds to do at the time. Why? Because it is stoked on surfing again and focusing his attention on specific events throughout the year. Not to mention all the great content on his blog. I don't know if we will ever see Dane Reynolds on the…
